PHNOM PENH: Cambodia will officially be acknowledged as the home of the largest recorded freshwater fish in the world this week.

On November 14, an award ceremony will be held where individuals who participated in the protection and conservation of giant stingrays and Mekong biodiversity will be awarded with a Guinness World Record certificate, including Minister of Agriculture Dith Tina.

In celebration, the Fisheries Administration, in collaboration with the Mekong River Wonder Project will organize an international workshop on the status of giant freshwater stingrays in the Mekong River.

In June 2022, fishermen in Stung Treng Province caught the largest freshwater fish in the world. The stingray, named Boramy (Khmer for “full moon”) weighed 300 kilograms, or about 661 pounds. She was then equipped with an acoustic tracker to help conservationists better understand her living habits and the results have provided keen insights that could help save the species.
